In My Groove

Tarah Bennett, a character from the Ajha’s Web series, jumped in my passenger seat on the drive to work today. She appeared during lyrics of “Bad” by Wale. She begged to know, “Is it bad that I never made love? I never did it. But I sure know how to f*** I’ll be a bad girl. I’ll prove it to you. I can’t promise I’ll be good to you ’cause I had some issues . . .”

It’s common for writers to connect with songs that depict moments or characters in their story. I thoroughly enjoy stumbling upon music that speaks to me creatively. Developing a playlist for my novels and later listening to those tracks lets me relive the story long after I’ve moved on to the next project. Artists like soul singer Anthony Hamilton, jazz saxophonist Gato Barbieri, R&B vocalist Sade, and rock’s Sinead O’Connor are part of a telling playlist for Ajha’s Web: A Series. What song conjures a special memory for you?
